Considering it is only the third largest city in the state and just cracks the top largest in terms of population in the country, you might be surprised to learn about the diversity of the economy in Shreveport. Like many larger cities in the United States, Shreveport had its start in manufacturing and still retains some today. Most notably, General Motors operates a large plant within the city limits. This plant makes the Hummer line as well as the Canyon model and a couple other GM cars. It has been a boon to the local economy because many smaller businesses, such as those offering car dealer supply, make money off of the plant operations. The plant has been slated to close several times, but sales of the Hummer have kept it afloat. With GM announcing the discontinuation of the Hummer models, though, it is likely the plant will close by 2012.

Most people probably don't think Louisiana when they think the film industry, but after New York and California, the state has the largest film industry in the country. While oil production and extraction slowed in the last part of the 20th century, newly discovered natural gas deposits under the Haynesville Shale has revived this sector.
